Sedimentary rock Flashcards
Lithification
the physical and chemical processes that transform sediemtns into sedimentary rocks.
deposition
when sediments sink to the bottom of a body of water. This causes layers of sediments to layer on the bottom. Order going larger particals then smaller particles.
Compaction
the process in which the volume and porosity of a sediment is decreased by the weight of overlying sediments as a result of burial beneath over sediments.
Clastic
formed from deposits of loose sediments that accumulate over time on earths surface.
Conglomerate
rocks that are composed of rounded fragments. Ranged in size from mud to boulder.
Breccia
a conglomerate rock but with sharp and angular corners
Coarse grained rocks
Said of a crystalline rock, and of its texture, in which the individual minerals are relatively large
Medium grained rocks
sandstone- that has been cemented together with sand sized particles.
Porosity
The percentage of open spaces between grains in the rocks. sandstone can have up to 30%
Fine-grained rocks
Clay, shale, mudstone, siltstone and slate (cemented together with clay sized particles)
Chemical sedimentary rocks
sedimentary rock that forms when minerals precipicate from a solution or settle from suspension.
Bio chemical sedimentary rocks
sedimentary rocks that form from the remails of once living plants or animals.
examples of biochemical rocks
limestone (mainly calcite) and coal (mainly carbon)
