Igneous Rocks Flashcards
Porphyritic texture
rocks characterized by large, well formed crystals surrounded by finer-grained crystals of the same mineral or different minerals.
Vesicular
A rock characterized by a spongy looking appearance due to gases being trapped in the think magma.
Veins
igneous intrusions that sometimes contain valuable ore deposits.
pegmatities
veins of extremely large-grained minerals that contains ores.
intermediate rock
igneous rock that contains less silica than felisic but more than mafic.
felsic rock
lighter in color and also contains a lot more silica and feldspar (called granite)
mafic
dark in color and contains a lot of magnesium and iron (also called a basalitic rock)
Partial melting
the process where by some minerals melt at a relativity low temperature while other minerals remain solid.
Fractional Crystallization
the first minerals to crystallize are the last minerals to melt.
What are the four main factors involved in the formation of magma?
Temperature, Pressure, Water content, and mIneral content.
Sillica
Sillica affects the melting temperatures and impacts how quickly magma flows.
