Sediment and Transportation Flashcards
what are the four sources of shingle?
- Rivers: Fine grains, Silts and sands
- Cliffs: usually course sand and shingle is produced
- The sea: The tides move the sediment
- Glaciers and ice sheets
which type of wave pushes material up the beach?
constructive
which type of wave removes material from the beach?
destructive
what is traction?
when the largest cobbles and pebbles are rolled along the sea bed. A lack of energy from the waves mean that they cannot be picked up.
what is is saltation?
when smaller pebbles bounce along te sea bed. this is due to the changes in wave energy and the pebbles bouncing into other pebbles
what is suspension?
fine sands are held in the body of water and move with the current
what is solution
Microscopic material- dissolved in the sea water and is carried within the moving currents
what are the four processes in a sediment cell?
inputs, outputs, deposition and transportation
what are sediment cells separated by?
protruding land
what is sediment source?
material is collected on the coast from different places-rivers, sea beds, eroded coasts
what is a sediment cell?
distinct areas of coast, separated by deep water or headlands within which material is moved but contained within that cell
what is a sediment sink?
areas where sediment is deposited
when does the material sink?
when the energy of the water decreases eg. wave refraction because bays have calmer water
how many sediment cells are there around england and wales?
