National Technical Research Organisation (NTRO)

A

The NTRO was created after the 1999 Kargil conflict as a dedicated technical intelligence agency. It was finally constituted in 2004.
It is a technical intelligence gathering agency controlled directly by the National Security Adviser in the Prime Minister’s Office
 It also includes National Institute of Cryptology Research and Development.
Recently, the Home Ministry issued a notification listing NTRO under the Intelligence Organizations (Restriction of Rights) Act, 1985.

National Information Centre-Computer Emergency Response Team (NIC-CERT)

Government inaugurated the new body NIC-CERT to prevent and predict cyber-attacks on government utilities.
It is a dedicated body to detect, prevent and mitigate
the impact of cyber-attacks, by monitoring data across

the levels of government and between governments to
citizens.
• It will help in real time data monitoring and operate in

• The agency is tasked with the collection, analysis and dissemination of information on cyber incidents and

Boarder Protection Grid

A

The government has announced the establishment of Boarder Protection Grid with Indo-Bangladesh Border
(IBB) States.
The system will comprise of physical barriers, non-physical barriers, surveillance system, Intelligence agencies, State Police, BSF.
• It will be supervised by a State level Standing Committee under the Chairmanship of respective Chief
Secretaries and will ensure greater help for the States in the overall border security.

Ballistic Missile Defence System

It is being developed by DRDO in order to develop a multi-layered ballistic missile defence system
India has developed a functional ‘iron dome’ Ballistic missile which comprises of Endo and Exo Atmospheric Missiles.
• Exo-atmospheric Missile system is also called Prithvi Air Defence which is capable of intercepting missiles at an altitude of 50-80 Km.
• Endo-atmospheric system is also called Advanced Air Defence (AAD) is capable of intercepting missiles up to an altitude of 30 km.

It is India’s first indigenous stealth submarine.
• It can undertake multifarious types of missions, such as anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, intelligence gathering, mine laying and area surveillance.
It is equipped with Air-Independent Propulsion and thus, can remain underwater undetected for more time.

Indian Ocean Naval Symposium

A

It is a voluntary initiative that seeks to increase maritime co-operation among navies of the littoral states of Indian Ocean Region by providing an open and inclusive forum for discussion of regionally relevant maritime issues.
 The inaugural IONS was held in 2008 under the chairmanship of the Indian Navy.
International Multilateral Maritime Search and Rescue Exercise (IMMSAREX) is a first-ever sea-based exercise under the aegis of Indian Ocean Naval Symposium which is currently chaired by Bangladesh with the participation of Indian Ocean Littoral states in the Bay of Bengal.
 IMMASAREX is significant for the fact that along with India, China will also participate in the backdrop of scepticism of China’s activities in the Indian Ocean and its base in Djibouti.

NIRBHAY.

A

It is India’s first indigenous Long Range Sub-Sonic Cruise Missile, developed and designed by Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
 It can carry a warhead of 200 kg to 300 kg at a speed of 0.6 to 0.7 Mach with a launch weight of about 1500 kg.
 It can avoid detection as it has the ability to cruise at heights as low as 100 m.
 It is powered by solid rocket motor booster and has a range of 1000km
With the successful launch of NIRBHAY, India joins the select league of nations that possess the ability to make sub-sonic cruise missile.

Island Development Agency (IDA)

A

IDA was constituted in June 2017 for the holistic development of islands. It is chaired by Union Home minister and includes secretaries of various ministries.
 The IDA had identified 10 islands for development which include 5 islands in A&N Islands (i.e. Smith, Ross, Long, Avis and Little Andaman) and 5 in Lakshadweep (i.e. Minicoy, Bangaram, Thinnakara, Cheriyam, Suheli).

INS Kiltan (P30)

INS Kiltan is third of the four kamorta class anti-submarine warfare corvettes being built under naval
modernisation project P-28.
 INS Kamorta and INS Kadmatt which were two ships constructed earlier under the same project. The fourth ship INS kavaratti is still under construction.
 It is India’s first major warship to have a superstructure of carbon fibre composite material resulting in improved stealth features, lower top weight and maintenance costs.
 It was designed by Directorate of Naval Design and constructed by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Limited, Kolkata.

What is Comprehensive Integrated Border Management System (CIBMS)?

A

 It is a robust and integrated system that is capable of
addressing the gaps in the present system of border security by seamlessly integrating human resources, weapons, and high-tech surveillance equipment.
 It has three main components:
o New high-tech surveillance devices such as sensors,
detectors, cameras, etc. as well as existing equipment
for round-the-clock surveillance of the international border.
o An efficient and dedicated communication network including fibre optic cables and satellite communication
for transmitting data gathered; and
o A command and control centre to which the data will be transmitted providing a composite picture of the
international border.

Astra - Beyond Visual Range Air to Air Missile (BVRAAM)

A

The missile has been developed by the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) together with Indian Air Force (IAF).
 It is an all-weather weapon’s system capable of destroying an enemy target 60 to 70 km far away. In a typical Astra engagement both the launcher and the target move at a speed in excess of 1000 kmph.

Medium Range Surface to Air Missiles (MRSAM)

A

 It is an advanced, all-weather, mobile, land-based air defence system.
 It is capable of engaging multiple aerial targets at ranges of more than 50 km.
 The system will be jointly developed by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) and DRDO with the involvement of private sectors and DPSUs. The system will have majority indigenous content, giving a boost to the Make-in-India initiative.
 The MRSAM is a land-based variant of the long-range surface-to-air missile (LRSAM) or Barak-8 naval air defence system, which is designed to operate from naval vessels.

A

‘Bicycle Patrols’ was launched recently by the Delhi Police.
 It would act as a complement and supplement its existing motorcycle and PCR patrols which focus mainly on crime prevention along the arterial and main roads of Delhi.
 One of the main focus areas will be parks where senior citizens and women go for walks.
 Bicycle patrols will also be introduced in the University campuses and schools/colleges where the police officers can have a friendly interface with the student community.

Strategic Partnership model for defence manufacturing

A

 The idea is to enlist private sector defence companies in each of the segments as strategic partners for long-term contracts.
 This company then starts a Joint Venture with the foreign Original Equipment Manufacturer selected through the procurement process, to build the platform in India with significant technology transfer.
 And long term contracts will be awarded to these companies, to give them the economies of scale as defence involves large investments.
 To strengthen the private industries in the defence and defence PSUs and create domestic expertise in four key areas: fighter aircraft, helicopters, submarines, and armoured vehicles and main battle tanks.
