Secure Network Protocols Flashcards
Mock Exam Revision
Telnet
Telnet (Telecommunication Network)
A legacy network protocol for bidirectional text-based communication over TCP/IP. Lacking encryption, it transmits data (including credentials) in plaintext, making it highly vulnerable to interception. Deprecated in favor of SSH (Secure Shell) for remote administration.
IMAPS
IMAPS (Internet Message Access Protocol Secure)
A encrypted version of the Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP), securing email retrieval between clients and servers. Operates on TCP port 993, leveraging TLS/SSL to protect credentials and message content from interception. Replaces legacy IMAP (port 143) as the modern standard for secure email access.
SRTP
SRTP (Secure Real-Time Transport Protocol)
A encryption protocol for securing real-time audio/video streams (e.g., VoIP, video conferencing). It adds confidentiality (AES encryption), authentication (HMAC-SHA1), and replay protection to RTP packets, preventing eavesdropping and tampering. Defined in RFC 3711, it’s mandatory for modern secure communication apps.
