Malware Attacks Flashcards
Mock Exam Revision
Computer Virus
A type of malware that replicates by inserting its code into other programs/files. Requires human action (e.g., opening a file) to spread. Differs from:
Worms: Spread automatically over networks.
Trojans: Disguised as harmless software.
- A self-replicating computer program containing malicious segment.
- Malware that typically requires its host application to be run to make the virus active.
- Malicious code that typically attaches itself to an application program or other executable component.
PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program)
A software that users unintentionally install, often bundled with legitimate downloads. While not outright malicious, PUPs may exhibit adware, data collection, or deceptive behaviours. Anti-malware tools often flag them for removal.
- Often installed without clear user consent.
- Can be pre-installed, downloaded, or bundled with other software.
- Generally considered undesirable due to negative impact on system performance, privacy, and security.
Bloatware
Refers to unnecessary preinstalled software on devices, typically added by manufacturers or carriers. While not malicious, it consumes resources, annoys users, and is often hard to remove. Also called crapware or PUPs (Potentially Unwanted Programs).
- Pre-installed on a device by the device manufacturer or retailer.
- Generally considered undesirable due to negative impact on system performance.
- Installed without user consent.
