- they exercise stern disciple, regulating the beliefs and lifestyles of members and using sanctions against those who deviate, including the possibility of expulsion
- they demand ongoing commitment from members overriding all other interests
- often led by a charismatic leader ‘magnetic’ personality

- audience cult- provided little beyond information services of some kind for individuals and there is little involvement of followers, there is little involvement for followers
- client cult- more organisation and offer services to followers (customers) such as therapy and courses often sold
- cult movements- more organised involving a wider range of activities, support and personal involvement and commitment
