sections 1.1, 1.2, & 1.3 Flashcards
any substance that has a definite composition, will always be made up of the same things no matter where the chemical comes from
Chemical
the process by which one or more substances change to produce one or more different substances. Ex. taking a photo, striking a match
Chemical Reaction
the physical forms of matter which are solid, liquid, gas, and plasma
All matter is made of particles
States of Matter
matter that you can see with the unaided eye
Macroscopic
what you would see if you could see individual atoms
Microscopic
Have a fixed volume and shape that results from the way their particles are arranged. They vibrate only slightly
Solids
Have fixed volume not fixed shape. Takes the shape of its container.
Liquids
Have neither fixed volume nor fixed shape. Gas particles weakly attract one another and move independently at a high speed.
Gasses
Changes in which the identity of a substance doesn’t change but the arrangement, location, and speed of the particles may change. Changes in state
Physical Changes
when the identity of a substance changes and new substances are formed. Atoms rearrange, they are not created or destroyed. So mass doesn’t change
Chemical Change
the substance on the left side of the arrow that cause a chemical change
Reactants
substances on the right side of the arrow. Created by the reaction
Products
Evidence of Chemical Change
Evolution of gas
Formation of a precipitate
Relase of absorption of energy
Color change in the reaction system
a measure of the size of a body or region in three-dimensional space
Volume
the quantity of matter contained in that object. A fundamental property of an object that is not affected by the forces that act on the object such as the gravitational force
Mass
