What does a Section 2 allow?
- Admission for assessment
- Can give treatment against a patient’s wishes
How long does a Section 2 last for and can it be renewed?
28 days non-renewable
Who can request a Section 2?
An Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) on the recommendation of 2 doctors
What does a Section 3 allow?
- Admission for treatment
- Treatment can be given against a patient’s wishes
How long does a Section 3 last for and can it be renewed?
6 months - renewable
Who can request a Section 3?
An AMHP along with 2 doctors, all of whom must have seen the patient within the last 24 hours
What is a Section 4 and when is it used?
It’s an assessment order used as an emergency section when a Section 2 would take too long
How long does a Section 4 last for?
72 hours
Who can request a Section 4?
GPs or AMHPs
What can Sections 5(2) and 5(4) do?
Detain a patient who is voluntarily in hospital

A doctor

What is a Section 17a?
Community treatment order
When is a Section 17a used?
To recall a patient to hospital from the community for treatment if they’re not complying with their conditions e.g. not taking medications
What is a Section 135 used for and who by?
Used by police to enter a private property and remove a person to a place of safety
What is a Section 136 used for and who by?
Used by police to remove a person from a public place to a place a safety
