How did the South feel about protective tariffs being put in place?

A

THEY HATED IT!
They relied on European markets to buy their raw goods (cotton) to make their manufactured goods. When the protective tariff was put in place, Europe stopped buying a lot of the South’s cotton, because the US wasn’t buying a lot of Europe’s finished goods.
