What is sectionalism?
caring about your region over the country as a whole
What is a compromise?
A settlement of a disagreement in which each side gives up something, or the result of such a settlement.
What is a fugitive?
A person who has fled from custody (criminal)
What is the Fugitive Slave Act?
If a slave runs away from his plantation and owner in the South, it’s a responsibly for anyone who catches him to return him to his owner.
What is popular sovereignty?
Power of the people to vote (specifically on whether they wanted slavery in their territory or not at this time)
What is an abolitionist?
A person who advocates or supports the end of slavery
What does oppose mean?
To go or be against something, to not support something
How did the South feel about protective tariffs being put in place?
THEY HATED IT!
They relied on European markets to buy their raw goods (cotton) to make their manufactured goods. When the protective tariff was put in place, Europe stopped buying a lot of the South’s cotton, because the US wasn’t buying a lot of Europe’s finished goods.
What was the Nullification Crisis?
South Carolina was threatening to secede (leave) the U.S. due to the protective tariffs and it hurting the cotton plantations in their state. They thought, as a state, they didn’t have to enforce the implementation of the tariff.
How did the North feel about protective tariffs being put in place?
THEY LOVED IT!
More people had to buy American made products made in the North as the foreign products were more expensive
How did the North feel about slavery?
THEY HATED IT!
It was outlawed there and many abolitionist movements began
How did the South feel about slavery?
THEY LOVED IT!
Slaves are essential to the plantation system and are viewed as property with no rights
What is the Missouri Compromise of 1820?
- Slavery is not allowed above the above 36º 30’ parallel
- Maine is added as a free state
- Missouri is added as a slave state
What is the Compromise of 1850?
- California admitted as a free state
- New Mexico & Utah Territories (citizens use popular sovereignty to determine if territory would be free or slave)
- Fugitive Slave Law is put in place
What is the Kansas Nebraska Act?
- Divided the Louisiana Purchase into the territories of Kansas and Nebraska
- Allow citizens of Kansas and Nebraska to use popular sovereignty (voting) to determine if it would be free or slave
- Led to Bleeding Kansas (a bloody battle between pro-slavery groups & anti-slavery groups)

What was the Underground Railroad?
secret routes and hiding spots for slaves to escape slavery from the South to the North
How did the West feel about the protective tariffs being put in place?
THEY LOVED IT!
The extra funds helped build railroads, canals, roads, and other needed items to help the West.
What is the Nat Turner Rebellion?
An enslaved man who led a rebellion of enslaved people. His action set off a massacre of up to 200 Black people and a new wave of oppressive (harsh) legislation prohibiting (stopping) the education, movement, and assembly of enslaved people
What is Uncle Tom’s Cabin?
Harriet Beecher Stowe’s book that wanted to show the North the evils of slavery through splitting slave families & brutalities of slavery.
What is the Kansas Nebraska Act?
Bill (law) proposed by Stephen Douglas to split the Kansas and Nebraska territory in half and the people would decide to be a slave state or non slave state by popular sovereignty (people in the territory’s voting).
What is Bleeding Kansas?
The violent acts that occurred when pro-slavery and anti-slavery forces.
What is a tariff?
a tax on an imported good
What is the purpose of a tariff?
to get Americans to buy American made goods
Dred Scott v. Sanford did what 2 things?
1) Declared Missouri Compromise Unconstitutional
2) Declared Slavery Lawful
What does abolish mean?
to get rid of
