A

After the war of 1812 there was unity in the United States. Federalist party dissapears since they didn’t support the war. The fifth president of the U.S. was James Monroe (democratic republican).

What is sectionalism?

A

It is when regional differences surface strong alligance to their region.
This was growing in the US. Slavery conflict, Southerners stress
States’ rights. Tariffs, national bank become problems.

Who was Daniel Webster?

A

Elected to congress in 1812 , New Hampshire. Favored tariff of 1816 which protected U.S. industry from foreign competition. He was a good speaker. He said “Liberty and Union, now and forever, one and inseparable!”

Who was Henry Clay?

A

He was a war hawk from kentucky. A speaker in house of representatives of 1812. Helped create the treaty of Ghent which ended the war of 1812. He tried to resolve sectional disputes through compromise.

What was the Missouri Compromise of 1820?

A

Misssouri is slave state and Maine a free state. Except for Missouri, slavery was to be excluded from the Louisiana Purchase lands north of latitude 36°30.

A

Spain ceded Florida. U. S. assumed claims of its citizens against Spain up to $5 million. U. S. relinquished claims to Texas. Southern boundary of Louisiana Purchase clarified

A

Henry clay called for a protective tariff. Also an internal improvement program (build roads and canals for trade). A national bank to control inventions and lend money ro developing industries.

What was McCulloch v. Maryland?

A

Maryland imposed a tax on the Balitmore branch of the 2nd National Bank. McCuloch refused to pay. They went to supreme court justice Jhon Marshall. He said that maryland had no right to tax a federal institution.

A

Congress of Vienna and legitimacy. Latin American/Mexican Revolutions. British interest. “Cockboat in the wake of a British Man of War”. Western Hemisphere is closed to further European Colonization. Attempts to colonize would be viewed unfavorably. No interference with existing colonies. U. S. would stay out of European affairs

A

USA and britain set limit on numbers of naval ships each could have on the great lakes. Also there was the disarmament which was the removal of weapons and Americans get the right to settle in Oregon country.
