What does the word Sectionalism mean?
Loyalty and identifying with your part of the country rather than the entire country
What was the economy of the North based on?
industry/manufacturing goods and the sale/trade of those goods
What is urbanization?
The growth of cities - a result of industrialization
What were conditions like in Northern cities?
Crowded and unsanitary conditions led to the spread of diseases; pollution
What was the purpose of trade unions?
To fight for better conditions for workers such as higher pay, shorter hours, safer and more hygienic environments
How were immigrants treated in the North?
Immigrants faced discrimination in the North by Nativists who accused them of stealing jobs from Americans
Explain the impact that the cotton gin had on the south.
The cotton gin cleaned cotton at a much faster rate which led to plantations growing in scale - planting more cotton to harvest - the increase in size and number of plantations led to an INCREASED need for labor which led to a rise in slavery
What is meant by the phrase “Cotton Kingdom”?
Nickname for the “deep south” where cotton is grown - cotton’s value led to many riches for the plantation owners
Why was slavery important to the South?
Southern plantations relied on slave labor to operate
Who are the Cottonocracy and why do they have that name?
Cottonocracy refers to the wealthy cotton plantation owners who, because of their wealth and power, became government officials and were a driving force behind the laws and culture of the Cotton Kingdom
What was the purpose of slave codes?
Slave codes regulate the relationship between slave and owner - some protect slaves like their owner being required to give them new clothing once a year, while others controlled their behavior like not being allowed to learn to read or write
Most slave codes attempted to make sure that slaves couldn’t rebel or escape
Why did sectional differences develop between the North and the South?
-the North colder climate. arder, rockier soil which was not well-suited to growing crops but they had rivers and harbors which meant they were better suited for mills/factories and trade
-the South had a warm climate with rich fertile soil which was well-suited for agriculture on a large scale. They did not need to industrialize due to this.
What was the Underground Railroad? Who was a famous conductor who risked her life helping slaves?
A secret network of pathways that led runaway slaves to the North and Canada - though escaped slaves had no help until they reached a Northern state, once their abolitionists would help them
How did Henry Brown escape slavery?
With some help, he shipped himself in a large box to abolitionists in the North
