What influenced Television development in Australia?

A

Bruce Gyngell, a presenter on Australia’s first commercial television network TCN-9, officially introduced television to the Australian public on 16 September 1956 with the words ‘Good evening, and welcome to television’. The release date coincided with the Melbourne Olympics, which were held from 22 November to 8 December 1956. Hence it was due to the Melbourne Olympics that Television was introduced.

A

It was a visit from American Olympic champion Duke Kahanamoku in 1914 which introduced Australians to modern surfing, which was what slowly snowballed into the craze for surfing. However, Australia never missed the Olympics which engrained sport even more into their culture and spread its development.

A

Sport has influenced the youth culture of many Australians, with surfing, promoting inclusiveness and By the 1970s, Australian beach and surf culture had become a clearly defined movement with a strong focus on freedom of expression and rebellion. Moreover, Australia has participated in every Olympics and their athletes have done outrages things. Such in the case of Peter Normal which affected racism.

As such, the sport became a focus for youth counter-culture and rebellion; it became a way for young Australians to make a statement to older generations.

A

The Australian film industry has also recently developed strong ties with Bollywood. The largest and most successful film industry in the world, Bollywood is the name given to the Indian film industry. Since the 1990s, the link between the two industries has become closer. Increased Indian immigration, a changing Australian diplomatic and economic focus in Asia and strong cultural links, including a shared colonial heritage, have assisted the development of this relationship. Many Bollywood films have been shot in Australia and several Australian actors and personalities have featured in them.

What impact did television have on Australian life and culture, especially the youth?

A

Since it arrived in Australia in 1956, no form of mass media has been more influential in establishing and reinforcing popular culture than television. From humble beginnings, the television would become a pivotal cultural and political tool, and would help to transform the country forever. Australians and other nations used this to influence others. With Australia, establishing Channel 0/28 the worlds first ethnic television channel as the Fraser government believed it would assist immigrants in understanding Australia and would better reflect their interests. Also some channels covered stories such as the Vietnam war, which helped gather sympathy and influence the views of Australians.

A

It helped unify Australian citizens together despite factors such as race, sex and religion. With many attending concerts, and many rock songs from cultures such as First Nations being made to produce sympathy.
