What does “right of way” mean?
Definition: The legal right of a pedestrian, cyclist, or motorist to proceed with precedence over others in a particular situation or place.
What are some examples of “right of way”?
- A vehicle that arrives at a four-way stop first has the “right of way”, which means that this motorist can drive their vehicle first.
- A pedestrian or bicyclist crossing the street has the “right of way”, which means that you must yield first before driving your vehicle.
When can you pass a vehicle on your right?
When a vehicle is making a left turn.
Two or more lanes in the same direction.
An expressway or interstate highway.
When can you pass a vehicle on your left?
Only when it’s needed to pass a vehicle on your left. The road marks must have a white or yellow dotted line.
When should you NOT pass a vehicle on your left?
When there’s a solid yellow line.
When the view is obstructed when approaching the crest of a grade or curve.
When approaching 100 feet of an intersection, bridge, tunnel, or railroad.
What “right of way” rules apply at intersections?
Must yield to pedestrians who are legally crossing the street.
Must yield to pedestrians when crossing a sidewalk, entering/exiting a driveway, an alley, or a parking lot.
Must yield to oncoming vehicles from the opposite direction when making a left turn.
Must yield to the motorist who fully stopped first at a four-way intersection.
What are some examples of emergency vehicles?
Ambulance
Fire Truck
Police Car
Chief Battalion SUV
Tow Truck
If you see an emergency vehicle with flashing red or blue lights and blasting sirens, what should you do?
Slow down and pull over to the curb or shoulder of the road.
What should you do if you approach a stationary emergency vehicle displaying red or blue lights?
Proceed with caution by driving at a low speed. Be prepared to make a lane change at the scene.
How many feet will the bus driver turn on its amber lights before making a stop?
