What were the aims of British colonisers?

A

They were on a ‘civilising mission’ to try and improve the areas of the empire, for their benefit and the ‘benefit’ of the indigenous people

What were the two responses to British rule?

A
  • Positively; People that had enjoyed economic growth and prosperity tended to see the British positively e.g. India princes/sepoys
  • Negatively;Those with associated rule with hardships and deprivation were not happy

How was there colonial loyalty in the empire?

A
  • There was often a sense of loyalty and pride among those who were in the empire; strong attachment to British institutions and to the Crown between 1914-47 as evidenced by support given to Britain in World Wars
  • Coronation of George VI in 1937 widely celebrated and covered by 23 hours of continuous broadcasting in Canada
  • Empire day and other festivals brought people out onto streets; millions tuned into monarch’s Christmas message
