Section I Flashcards
Sinus Arrhythmia
variation of heart rate by more than .16 seconds
Sick Sinus Syndrome
Failure of the hearts pacemaking abilities; aka brandy tachycardia syndrome; often 4 sec break between bradytachycardia beats with ventricular escape beats
“Atrial Beat”
p-wave has different shape meaning it did not start in the sinus node
Junctional Beat
No p-wave but QRS is relatively normal. Beat did not orginate in the atria but instead near the AV Junction
Ventricular Escape Beat
QRS is wide; beat originated somewhere in ventricles; no p wave; HR 25-40 BPM
Aberrant
Conduction through the ventricles
Ectopic
originated somewhere other than the SA node
Ectopic Beat
No p-wave, QRS is wide and bizarre
Premature Ventricular Contractions
“Skipped heart beats”; R on T; No p-wave unless retrograde; T-waves usually large and opposite in polarity to QRS
Wide Notched PVCs
may indicate dilated hypokinetic left ventricle
Every other beat PVC (bigeminy)
may indicate coronary artery disease
PVC between two normal beats
called interpolated PVC
Premature Atrial Contraction
oddly shaped p-wave; normal QRS; often benign; myocardium may not activate
Premature Junctional Contractions
no p-wave; normal QRS; often benign
Atrial Fibrillation
Irregularly irregular appearance of QRS complex; absence of discrete p waves; teeth/wavy like appearance;
