Section B Questions Territory And Personal Space Flashcards
Individual- situational territory and personal space
Research is individual when the importance someone places on something is due to their own personal preference (Wells- women care more about personalisation than men).
Research is individual when a persons culture affects how they behave (Smith).
Research is situational when the presence of someone else affects a persons behaviour (Middlemist- urinated for less time in the close condition because stooge was making them uncomfortable).
Research is situational when communication between people is made better or worse by external factors e.g. whether they’re facing eachother (Sommer and Ross).
Sampling bias
A sample is biased when it includes predominantly one sex (Wells- 55% male 41% female).
A sample is less biased when it uses participants from a range of countries (Smith- France, Germany and America).
A sample is biased when it has a sample of predominantly one race (Wells- 69% white).
A sample is biased when participants are collected from one place (Middlemist- one university in America).
Usefulness
Research is not useful when it suggests changes that aren’t possible for some people (Newman defensible space).
Research is useful when it implies changes that could be made to benefit a company or environment (Wells).
Research is useful when it can affect how people behave around their superiors (Hall)
