types of sentencing
there are 4- 5 types of sentencing:
1- custodial sentence - when the crime is serious e.g hutchinson v uk
2- community sentences- community order unpaid work drug or alcohol treatment
3- fines -
4- discharges- least serious crime sentence e.g minor theft
factors of sentencing
mitigating factor - makes crime less worse e.g no previous convictions , linent sentence.
aggravating sentence: make offence more serious and lead to harsh sentence.
such as previous convictions

aims of sentencing
1- punishment- apply to serious offences , e.g murder
2- detterence- putting people off from committing the crime
3- rehabilitation- stop them from offending the crime , rehabilitate the behaviour , e.g training , education.
4-protection of the society- removing offender from the society
5- reparation- paying back to society what has been taken away in form of compensation , or unpaid work.
