Differences between endocrine and exocrine glands
Endocrine - Ductless. Release hormones directly into haemolymph. Affect the individual bee.
Exocrine - Ducted, Release pheromones to outside the body. Affects other bees.
Name three of the glands making up the endocrine system in a larva, describe where they are located and what they do
Neurosecretory Cells.
In groups in brain and ganglia
Secrete chemicals to other glands or down nerve fibres to other
organs.
Corpora Cardiaca.
2 glands behind either side of aorta.
Store chemicals produced by neurosecretory cells and also make
chemicals of their own
Corpora allata.
Either side of oesophagus.
Produce Juvenile Hormone.
Prothoracic glands.
2 glands in thorax near first spiracle.
Produce and secrete ecdysone.
What endocrine gland is present in the larva but not in the adult bee and what does it produce
Prothoracic
Ecdysone
What is the function of the alimentary system
To store and filter nectar, remove pollen, digest the pollen and nectar where appropriate. Collect waste from the haemolymph and debris from digestion, recover salt and water before passing on to the rectum.
