Effects of the eruption:

Primary effects:
- 700 people evacuated from the area
- Ash deposits across the surrounding environment, affecting plants and wildlife.
- Homes were damaged.
- Respiratory problems and skin irritations from fine particles

Secondary effects:
- Flights canceled across Europe
- Airlines lost an estimated 130 million GBP a day.
- People stranded abroad due to flight cancellations.
- Livestock taken inside to escape the ash, if eaten the animals would be unwell.
- Flooding as the glacier melted

Coastal Management

Holderness Coast

  • Bridlington is protected by a 4.7 km long sea wall.
  • Hornsea is protected by a sea wall, groins and rock armour.
  • Coastal management at Withernsea has tried to make the beach wider by using groins, and also uses a seawall to protect the coast.
  • Mappleton is protected by rock groins.
  • Spurn Head is protected with groins and rock armor.

Conflicts
- Increase in erosion at Great Cowden because of the groins used in Mappleton. –> farms destroyed by the erosion and the loss of 100 chalets at a hotel.
- Some sea defences negatively impact tourism and reduce the amount of money coming into the area.
