What is a megacity?
a city with more than 10 million people

What has caused rapid population growth?
development of more modern medicines and health care.
more hygienic and cleaner things like water and sewage
What does urbanisation mean?
the increase in the percentage of a population living in cities or towns.
What are high income countries (HIC)?
They have large urban populations (over 75%).
Urbanisation happened earlier here (during the industrial revolution).
Most people already live there.
A few people move away from urban areas to increase quality of life.
What are low income countries (LIC)?
They have smaller urban populations (around 35%).
Rural to urban migration has been occurring faster than HIC’s - urbanisation is speeding up.
What are Newly emerging economics (NEE)?
These vary depending on when they industrialised. As they industrialised, urbanisation increased rapidly.
What does migration mean?
moving from place to place
What is natural increase?
when more people are born than dying
What does GDP stand for?
Gross Domestic Product
What does PPP mean?
People’s Purchasing Power
What is a Pull factor?
Something that makes you want to stay in an area (Pull you in)
What is a Push factor?
Something that makes you want to leave an area (push you away)
