Why was there disagreement over the Treaty after it had been signed?
Because the Maori and English texts differed significantly
What did the English Treaty say?
The English Treaty outlined the transfer of Sovereignty from Maori to the British Crown in exchange for the protection of chieftainship
What did the Maori Treaty say?
That the English would govern their lands, but they would maintain the right to manage their own affairs. They were guaranteed full authority over their treasures
What was is Treaty of Waitangi?
A broad statement of principles upon which the British officials and Maori chiefs made a political convent to found a nation state and build a government within NZ.
What was the ultimate issue with a Treaty of Waitangi?
The Maori thought they were giving away far less that what they had to give.
What does the Waitangi Tribunal do?
Was setup to make non-binding recommendations for:
- Compensation for wrongful seizure of land in private hands
Compensation for wrongful seizure of land in public hands
