Section A Full Ans Flashcards
As an actor playing the role of John, describe how you would enter the stage at the beginning of this extract. In your answer refer to movement and gesture.
John would enter the stage with a jovial, fast paced gate with a an open, fluid and relaxed gesture. John would lift his hand to his mouth in shock and delight.
Give two reasons for your suggestions.
Catherine has organised a party for ‘Mummy and Daddy’s Wedding anniversary. John would be relived at the turn around in Catherine’s behaviour and would feel delighted for the party hence the open, relaxed gesture. His gate would also be jovial as there are many guests so he needs to outwardly display his pleasure and conceal any form of worries he regarding his family.
Briefly describe the relationship between Catherine and Anna in this extract.
The relationship between Catherine and Anna is hostile, tense, strained and fractious as Anna has hidden Catherine’s scales because she believes Catherine’s obsession with her wight is running and interfering with the Dunbar’s lives, ‘Your obsession is ruining all our lives’.
Explain how the two actors could use voice to communicate this relationship to an audience.
Catherine would use dominating coercive tones as she is trying to manipulate Anna into giving her scales back and make Anna feel guilty for her comments, ‘I hate being your sister’. Catherine would also use a loud volume of voice particularly when shouting the line ‘You’ve no right to touch them’ to appearance aggressive and intimidating towards her sister. Anna’s voice would also be aggressive and filled with anger as she considers Catherine is ‘running all our lives’. Similarly her voice would be loud as both sisters are trying to compete with each other in the argument. As Anna loses her composure her accent would sound increasingly informal and her diction would be slightly worse as she is loosing control of the situation.
As a designer, describe two props that could be used in this extract.
One prop that could be used is a pair of scales which Catherine has become obsessed with. They would be oversized highlighting their importance to Catherine and the comfort they bring. They would be red in colour. On one hand red represents danger - Catherine’s anorexia is both a danger to herself and her family. The colour is also an indication of Catherine’s love for her scale and her passion for loosing weight. Another prop that would be is a tablet package. These would be placed in clear view of the audience on a table stage centre. This highlights that Catherine’s family are aware that she has been hoarding tablets. The tablets would noticeably be oversized also indicating to the audience Catherine has been hoarding large quantities of laxatives which is enough to kill her ‘four times over’.
Explain how the actor(s) could use these props in this extract. Give reasons for your suggestions.
