What is a traffic lane?
A section of road for a single line of traffic
What are the types of lane markings?
(yellow/white) Single, solid, and broken lines

what does a single solid yellow line indicate?
The center of a road in two-way traffic
Do not cross into oncoming traffic
Do not pass the vehicle in front if there is one lane
What do double solid yellow lines indicate?
Do not pass over
Never drive to the left of the lines
Do not make a u-turn or make a left turn to cross
When can you drive on the left of a double solid yellow line?
In a high-occupancy vehicle with an entrance on the left
Instructed by construction because of a closed road
Entering or exiting a driveway, private road, or u-turn
What does a broken yellow line indicate?
You may pass if the broken line is next to your driving lane
What does a single solid white line indicate?
Traffic lanes doing in the same direction
What do double solid white lines indicate?
A barrier between regular use and preferential use (carpool)
Never change lanes
What does a broken white line indicate?
Separate traffic lanes on road with two or more lanes in the same direction
What are end of lane markings?
Large broken lines indicating an exit or merge
What are yield lines?
Solid white line of triangles pointing at cars
What is an alternate name for the left lane?
Number 1 (fast lane)
What should the left lane be used for?
To pass or turn left
What should the right lane be used for?
To enter or exit traffic
When might you change lanes?
Moving from one lane to another
Entering the freeway from an on-ramp
Exiting the freeway
Entering the road from a curb or shoulder
What do you do before changing lanes?
Signal
Look in mirrors
Look over shoulder
Check blind spot
Check for space
Where is the passing lane in a multilane road?
Closest to the center divider
What is the passing lane used for?
Passing other vehicles

Passing lane
What are the requirements of the HOV lane?
Required number of people
Low emission vehicle (special decal)
Motorcycle
Carpools or buses
How do you identify a high occupancy vehicle lane?
Marked with a diamond and “carpool lane” sign
How do you NOT enter/exit an HOV lane unless designated?
Do not cross over double solid lines

In the middle of a two-way street
How is a center left turn lane marked?
On both sides by two painted lines
Inner line is broken
Outer line is solid
What is the center left turn lane used for?
Prepare for and make a left turn or u-turn
only drive for 200 feet
How do you use the center left turn lane?
Look for oncoming vehicles
Signal
Check shoulder for blind spot
Merge completely
Turn when safe
How do you turn left from a side street or driveway?
Signal and wait until safe
Drive into center left turn lane
What are turnout areas or lanes used for?
Allow cars to pass when driving slowly on a two- lane road and there are 5+ vehicles following
