Section 7 - Matter Flashcards
What is specific heat capacity?
energy required to raise one kilogram (kg) of the material by one degree Celsius (°C).
What is specific latent heat?
The energy required / released to change 1kg of a particular substance from one state to another, without changing its temperature
Required = heating, released = cooling
Specific latent heat of vapourisation
Energy change when a substance changes between a liquid and a gas
Evaporating / condensing
Specific latent heat of fusion
Energy change when a substance changes between a solid and a liquid
What is elastic deformation?
When an object returns to its original state once the force is removed
What is inelastic deformation?
Or plastic deformation
When a force is applied to an object, removed and then the object does not return to its original state - becomes deformed
What is the spring constant?
How many newtons it would take to strech the object by 1m
higher SP = stiffer material
What is hooke’s law
Force and extension are directly proportional
-> till the elastic limit / limit of proportionality
what happens when an object reaches its elastic limit?
It will start deforming inelastically
