Section 7-1 Flashcards
What is a cell?
The basic unit of life.
Describe the cell theory & list 3 generalizations it explains about cells.
Developed by several scientist using the data they gathered over a 200 year period.
- All living are made up of at least one cell.
- The cell is the most basic unit of life.
- All new cells come from existing cells.
What are he 3 general areas of a cell
- Cell membrane
- Cytoplasm and organelles
- Nucleus
Define eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells
Eukaryotic- contains a nucleus
Prokaryotic- doesn’t contain a nucleus
Give some examples of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells.
Eukaryotic- plant, animal, fungi, protist
Prokaryotic- bacteria and red blood cells.
Nucleus
Control center of the cell- acts like a cell membrane
Nucleolus
Organelle that makes proteins
Ribosomes
Site of protein synthesis– where protein molecules are made using the directions from DNA
Mitochondria
Converts the chemical energy stored in food into compounds that are more convenient for the cell to use
Rough ER
Contains ribosome on the outside of it’s membrane- serves as a tunnel for molecules to travel through the cytoplasm or out of the cell
Smooth ER
Organelle responsible for making new organelle and cell membrane using lipids, carbohydrates and proteins
Lysosomes
Breaks down lipids, carbs and proteins into small molecules that can be used by the rest of the cell
Vacuole
Stores materials such as water salts proteins and carbs
Golgi apparatus
Modifies and stores proteins
Cytoplasm
Fluid in between nuclear and cell membrane
