What are traffic lanes?
a section of road for a single line of traffic
What does a single yellow solid line mean?
The center of a 2 way road. Do not cross and do not pass vehicle in front if the road only has one lane
What do double solid yellow lines mean?
Do not pass double lines. Stay to the right UNLESS the HOV lane has an entrance to the left, instructed by construction to pass because a side/lane is blocked, enter/exit a driveway or private road, or U turn
What do two sets of double solid yellow lines mean?
A barrier that should not be crossed unless there is an opening
What is a broken yellow line?
A line that you can pass if it is next to your driving lane
What is a single solid white line mean?
Marks traffic lanes going in the same direction and includes one way streets
What do double solid white lines mean?
A lane barrier between regular use and preferential use like HOV lanes. You cannot enter double solid white lines until you see an opening.
What do broken white lines mean?
Separate traffic with 2 or more lanes in the same direction
What are end of lane markings?
Lanes that signal end of freeway or street lanes. Be prepared to exit
What is a yield lane?
A line of white triangles pointing towards vehicles of where to stop
What to do before changing lanes?
- signal
- look in mirrors
- check traffic behind and beside you
- look over your shoulder in the direction you plan to move to
- check blind spots
- be sure there is enough space
What is the passing lane?
The far left lane close to the center divider
What is the HOV lane?
Lane that is used for carpools, buses, motorcycles, or low emission vehicles
When can you use a HOV lane?
Certain number of people, driving low or zero emission vehicle, riding a motorcycle
What is a center left turn lane?
A lane in the center where you turn left to make a turn or u turn. This lane has a yellow broken line inside and a solid yellow line on the outside. This line is not to be used to pass traffic.
What is a turn out lane?
When one is driving slow and passing is unsafe. This allows cars behind you to pass ahead of you
How are bicycle lanes marked?
white solid lines or sometimes green
Is it illegal to drive in a bicycle lane?
yes
When can you drive in a bicycle lane?
Parking when it is permitted
entering or leaving the road, and turning within 200 feet of intersection
Can you turn right on a red light?
Yes as long as there isn’t a sign that says you can’t.
Can you turn right on a red arrow?
No
Can you turn right on a public transit lane?
It is illegal to stop, park, or drive in a public transit lane. You can however cross the lane to make a right turn.
Can you make a left turn on a red light?
Yes as long as you are in a one way street and move on to another one way street.
When can you do a u turn?
Across a double yellow line
-in a residential district if no cars are coming
-at a streetlight with a green light as long as there is no sign posted that you can’t
-a highway with opening for it.
When can you not make a U turn?
-When a sign is posted
- railroad crossing
-on a divided highway with a divided section or anything that a car can’t go through
-when you can see ahead of 200 feet
-one way street
-in front of a fire station
- business districts
What do when turning left from a two way street?
Start at the left lane in the middle and turn. Arrive at the left lane in the middle.
What to do when turning right from a two way street?
Start at the end lane towards the right and end in the last lane towards the right
What to do when turning left from a two way street to a one way street with two left lanes?
If you are in the last left lane then end in the last left lane. If you are in the second left lane then end in either second or third left lane.
What to do when turning left from a one way street to another one way street?
Start from last left lane and end in any lane that is open
What do when turning right from a one way street to another one way street?
Start from the last right lane and end in any right lane that is available
What do when turning in a T intersection from a one way street to a two way street?
Oncoming traffic that is going straight has the right of way. You have to wait until it is clear.
When parking downhill, how should the wheel be positioned?
Facing the curb
When parking uphill, how should the wheel be positioned?
Facing outward
When parking and there is no curb, how the should the wheel be positioned?
Facing the no curb
Should the parking brake be set when parking uphill or downhill?
yes
What does a white colored curb mean?
Picking or dropping passengers
What does a green colored curb mean?
Park for a limited time as posted
What does a yellow colored curb mean?
Load and unload passengers and freight
What does a red colored curb mean?
No parking, standing, or stopping
What does a blue colored curb mean?
Parking for a disabled person
What is considered illegal parking?
-when a sign is posted
-marked or unmarked crosswalk
-on a sidewalk
-near disabled ramp
-diagnol lines in parking
- tunnel or bridge
- parking designed for zero emission
-15 feet from a fire hydrant
-between safety zone and curb
