Section 6: Magnetism And Electromagnetism Flashcards
Examples of magnetically soft materials
Iron (Fe), Cobalt (Co), Nickel (Ni)
What is a magnetically soft material
Loses it magnetic properties as soon as it leaves a magnetic field, it’s magnetism is temporary
What do the magnetic field lines represent
The size and direction of the field
How to magnetic fields show their differing strength
Depends on how close/ far apart the lines are
Is an electromagnet hard or soft
Soft
What happens to the magnetic field lines are uniform
They must be parallel and equidistant
What happens when current flows in a wire
A magnetic field is made
There is only a magnetic field in a wire
If there is a flow charge (current)
How do you strengthen and electromagnet
Wrap around an iron ore, add more turns to coil, increase current
What happens if the current direction changes in a electromagnet
The direction of its b-field reverses
What happens when a charged particle moves in a magnetic field
It will experience a force from the field
What happens if a charged particle is moving parallel to a magnetic field
It will not feel a force
When will a charged particle feel the most force from a magnetic field
When it is moving at 90* to the the field
What is the motor effect
When a current-carrying wire or coil an exert a force on a permanent magnet
When is electricity induced
When there is relative motion between a conductor and a magnetic field
