What does section 57 do?
Regards treatment requiring Consent and a Second Opinion
What does it involve?
Psychosurgery and Surgical Implantation of Hormones, applying to formal and informal patients.
When can treatment be given under section 57?
(a) patient with capacity consents (certified by AC or SOAD)
(b) SOAD certifies that it is appropriate for the treatment to be given
How is it different to the others?
it is not an option, unless the P consents with capacity and they have a SOAD
What has CQC suggested as a new treatment?
Magnetic Seizure Therapy and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation
What did Kirov say?
It should be a last resort for depression.
Safeguards in relation to Magnetic Seizure Therapy?
Parliament must bring in safeguards along the lines of ECT
What was the CQC’s View?
Repeated suggestion to Government that the Mental Health regulations should extend the safeguards of section 57 to the use of DBS as a treatment for MD.
