Section 5 Flashcards
What is the formula for polychloroethene?
C2H3Cl
What does condensation polymerisation usually involve?
Two different types of monomer.
For each new bond which is formed what is lost?
A small molecule, for example water.
What is an example of condensation polymer?
Nylon
What is polyethene used in?
Plastic bags and bottles.
What is polypropene used in?
Kettles and food containers.
What is polychloroethene used in?
Clothes and pipes for insulating electrical cables.
What is the first step of the contact process?
Forming sulphur dioxide
What is the second step of the contact process?
Sulphur dioxide is oxidised to from sulphur trioxide.
What does the contact process make?
Sulphuric acid.
What is the sulphur trioxide dissolved in?
Concentrated sulphuric acid to form liquid oleum.
What happens to the oleum?
Diluted with measured amounts of water to form concentrated sulphuric acid.
What are the conditions for the contact process?
450C
2atm
vanadium (v) oxide.
What is sulphuric acid used in?
Fertilisers, detergents and paints.
