Contingent work
A job situation in which an individual does not have an explicit or implicit contract for long-term employment
What is the point of an employee leasing firm?
To handle all human resource related activities and costs such as payroll training and the administration of employee benefits. The subscribing firm leases these workers, but they remain employees of the leasing firm.
What is a co-employment relationship?
One in which two employers have actual or potential legal rights and duties with respect to the same employee or group of employees
What is a PEO?
A business entity that hires employees of its clients and then assumes all responsibility for all human resource management functions including administration of benefits
What is an H-1B?
A temporary work visa granted by the US citizenship and immigration services for people who work in specialty occupations jobs that require at least a 4 years bachelor degree in a specific field or equivalent experience
What are the steps in an effective whistle-blowing process?
1) assess the seriousness of the situation
2) begin documentation
3) attempt to address the situation internally
4) consider escalating the situation within the company
5) assess the implications of becoming a whistle-blower
6) use experienced resources to develop an action plan
7) execute the action plan
8) live with the consequences

What was the goal of the EU’s Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive?
Restrict the use of many hazardous materials and computer manufacturing, require manufacturers to use at least 65% reusable or recyclable components, implement a plan to manage products at the end of their life cycle in an environmentally safe manner, and reduce or eliminate toxic material in their packaging.
What is the false claims act?
A law enacted during the US civil war to combat fraud by companies that sold supplies to the Union army; also known as the Lincoln law.
What is qui tam?
A provision of the False Claims Act that allows a private citizen to file a suit in the name of the US government charging fraud by government contractors and other entities who receive or use government funds.
Predictive policing
Analytics to anticipate where crimes are more likely to happen and sending more police to neighborhoods where a high crime rate has been reported. This leads to a feedback loop because of the higher concentration of police leading to more arrests in those areas because of higher scrutiny.
Weblining
By using a person’s home address for a constellation of other data as a proxy for other characteristics, businesses were able to discriminate against members of racial minority groups while staying within the bounds of the law that forbade them from making decisions based on race. An allusion to redlining.
Sentencing software
Judges in parole cases are using algorithms to determine the likelihood that a given individual being considered for parole will reoffend if released. In the case of one widely used program, it was shown that black defendants are twice as likely to be incorrectly flagged as high risk, whereas white defendants were twice as likely to be incorrectly flagged as low risk.
