Q

Why must a device have internet access during Setup Assistant?

A

Internet access is required because all Apple devices contact Apple’s servers during Setup Assistant to determine if they belong to an organization, like a school or business. If they do belong to an organization, devices can then contact their assigned MDM provider for enrollment instructions.

Q

What are some benefits of using a PreStage enrollment for device setup?

A

When using a PreStage enrollment, administrators can configure a simplified Setup Assistant experience. The PreStage enrollment can also be used to customize the experience with organization-specific branding. For computers, PreStage enrollment provides the option to configure a local administrator account and designate standard privileges for users by default.

Q

Why might an organization enroll mobile devices with user-initiated enrollment?

A

If an organization does not have access to Apple School Manager or Apple Business Manager, or if devices were not purchased directly from Apple or through an authorized reseller, the devices are not eligible for Automated Device Enrollment, and user-initiated enrollment must be used. Additionally, user-initiated enrollment can be performed at any point in a device’s lifecycle, unlike Automated Device Enrollment, which can only be performed during Setup Assistant.

17
Q

Does a user performing user-initiated enrollment on a computer need to be a local admin?

A

Yes. By design, if an MDM profile is being installed on macOS, the computer will prompt for administrative credentials. This helps protect users from unexpected enrollment and management. If users in an organization are not granted administrative privileges, they may need assistance from IT to successfully enroll their computer with Jamf Pro.

18
Q

Can the text displayed during user-initiated enrollment be modified to be more user-friendly?

A

Yes. This can be done within Jamf Pro in the user-initiated enrollment settings. On the Messaging tab, the wording can be customized for most aspects of the enrollment page. If an additional language is required, it can be added here and customized as well.
