Time of the Judges
Early leaders in the Jewish community after the tribes settled into Canaan. This position was not inherited. Period ended when Saul became the first king.
Who was Ruth?
Convert to Judaism.
Who was David?
1000 bc, became the king, and captures Jerusalem. Started as a herder and warrior for King Saul.
Where did the name Judaism come from?
Named after an area called Judah.
Who were the Assyrian?
A group that defeated and took over the Jewish Kingdom.
Who was Nebuchadnezzear?
King of Babylon, a group that split away from the Assyrians. Destroyed the Temple of Solomon (587 bc). Thought to be the world’s wises man.
Babylonian Captivity
A period when many Jews were taken as slaves from Judah by Babylon. When the Persian Empire defeated the Babylon, the Jews were allowed to go home to Judah.
Second Temple
515 BC, the temple was built again, following the end of the Babylon Captivity.
What was the Diaspora?
Following the Babylon Captivity, groups of Jews were spread outside the boundaries of Israel. Greek work meaning scattering or dispersion.
Lands of the Diaspora
Counties that were hosts of communities of Jews. Ester was member of the Diaspora who helped save Jews from a Persian Empire.
Synagogue
Meeting place to pray and discus scriptures.

Jewish teacher
What is Hanukkah?
Jewish holiday to celebrate the victory of the Maccabees.
When did Judah become part of the Roman Empire?
DC 70, Romans destroyed the temple in Jerusalem.
