Origins of Judaism
Started in the fertile crescent 3000 years ago, in the area known as Mesopotamia. Worlds first monotheistic religion, a religion with a single god. Believe that God called for actions based on ethics. One of the worlds oldest religions
Ethics
Idea of right and wrong.
Torah
Religious book of Jews. First five books of the Jewish bible.
Who is Abraham?
Religious figure and sheep herder in the the Torah.
Where did God tell Abraham to go?
God told him to go to Canaan.
Covenant
Binding Agreement, in the Torah the Covenant is a binding agreement between God and Man.
Canaan
The Jewish promise land.
Isaac
Son of Abraham
Patriarch
Abraham, Isaac and Jacob
Who are the ancestors of the 12 Tribes of Israel?
The grandsons of Abraham, Jacob’s 12 sons. Became know as the Isrealites
What is the first book of the Torah?
Genesis
Describe the role of famine?
The book of Exodus describes the history of the Jews and their time in Egypt, slavery under the Pharaohs, and their ultimate exit to Canaan.
Who is Moses?
An Israelite adopted by the Pharaoh and leader of the Jews, who lead his people out of slavery.
What is the Sinai?
Area of the Middle East where the Isrealites first escaped from slavery under the Egyptians. The escape is called passover.
When did the Exodus occur?
Year 1200 BC.
How long did the Jews live in the desert?
40 years
Manna
Food from heaven provided by God to help the Jews in the desert.
Ten Commandments
Ten laws provided by God, given to Moses, at Mount Sinai. Told the Jews how to live and behave.
Impact of Gods Laws
Jews of a strong sense of each persons worth. Believe the each person has a responsibility to do good.
Lesson of Exodus
If people believe in God and follow his laws, they will be protected and supported.
Book of Joshua
Book that describes the entry of the Jews into Canaan.
City of Jericho
First city defeated by the Jews on their entry into Canaan.
Baal, El & Asherah
God of the people who lived in Canaan.
What are idols?
Carved images of a god or gods.
