Section 3 Flashcards
Explain The Abrahamic Covenant
- I will make you a great nation (Jewish nation)
- I will bless you (temporal blessings of land, servants, wealth)
- The nation promised to Abraham land as an inheritance. (everlasting possession) (Genesis 15:18 describes the place and boundaries)
Genesis 12:2, Genesis 15:18-21, Genesis 17:1-8
This was an unconditional covenant and the obligation to fulfill is on God alone.
The Gospel
The good news that Christ died on the cross for our sins in accordance with the scriptures, he was buried, and rose on the third day. 1 Corinthians 15:1-4
Progressive Revelation
The things that God revealed to humanity were not all given at once. His revelation was given in stages. This is known as progressive revelation. Hebrews 1:1,2
Dispensationalism
religious interpretive system and metanarrative for the Bible. It considers biblical history as divided by God into dispensations, defined periods or ages to which God has allotted distinctive administrative principles.
- Distinction between church and Israel
- Literal Understanding of Scripture
Calvinism
System of biblical doctrine that speaks of salvation of sinners and union with Christ and emphasizes God’s sovereignty and freedom.
Election
Election is the act of God whereby in eternity past He chose those who will be saved.
Election is unconditional, because it does not depend on anything outside of God, such as good works or foreseen faith Ephesians 2:1-3
inspiration of Scripture
God superintended (or carried along) the human authors of the Bible so that they composed and recorded without error His message to mankind in the words of their original writings (10). 2 Timothy 3:16, 2 Peter: 1:21
Atonement
To atone means to make up for. Christ suffered as a substitute for us resulting in paying for our sins. Man could only atone for his sins only if he could suffer eternally for his sins. Christ provided an eternal satisfaction for sin. Atonement involves an innocent party taking the punishment for the guilty party (a theme that runs throughout the bible, Genesis 3:21) The Hebrew word translated “atonement” is kaphar, meaning “to cover.” This suggests that through the act of atonement sin is covered so that God no longer sees it. Mark 10:45 – Son came to give His life for many.
Justification
To justify means to declare righteous. Both the Hebrew (sadaq) and the Greek (dikaioo) words mean to announce or pronounce a favorable verdict, to declare righteous. The concept does not mean to make righteous, but to announce righteousness
Regeneration
The work of God that gives new life to the one who believes (56).
Sanctification
God setting the believer apart for Himself: positionally at salvation, progressively throughout life, and ultimately when the believer arrives in His presence in heaven (67).
Glorification
The short answer is that “glorification” is God’s final removal of sin from the life of the saints (i.e., everyone who is saved) in the eternal state (Romans 8:18; 2 Corinthians 4:17). At Christ’s coming, the glory of God (Romans 5:2)—His honor, praise, majesty, and holiness—will be realized in us; instead of being mortals burdened with sin nature, we will be changed into holy immortals with direct and unhindered access to God’s presence, and we will enjoy holy communion with Him throughout eternity.
The Lord’s Supper
The Lord’s Supper is the name given by the Apostle Paul to the event that commemorated the death of Jesus Christ on the cross. On the night of His betrayal, Jesus instituted the ordinance of the Lord’s Supper. 1 Corinthians 11:23
Believers’ Baptism
An ordinance and command of Jesus that upon believing, one Is immersed in water. This symbolizes being buried and being raised with Christ in newness of life. Matthew 28
