Section 3 Flashcards
what is the respiratory portion?
allow gas exchange between air and blood
why are gases able to cross the membrane easily in the respiratory portion, at this level of the bronchial tree?
structures are one cell layer thick
where are lungs located
on either side of the heart, within the thoracic cavity
which lung is larger and why?
right is larger due to the positioning of the heart
Describe the right lung
-has 3 lobes
-superior, middle, and inferior lobes
-has two fissures (seperate the lobes)
-horizontal and oblique fissure
Describe the left lung
-two lobes
-superior and inferior lobes
-superior lobe: contains the cardiac notch
-on superior lobe there is a small outward facing process called the lingula, that covers the heart
-has only one fissures: the oblique fissures, seperating the two lobes
what is the cardiac notch?
a depression on the anterior border of the left lung that accomodates the space taken up by the apex of the heart
what are the surfaces of the lungs?
-apex
-diaphragmatic
-costal
-mediastinal
what is the apex surface of the lungs?
-most superior point of the lungs
-sits just above the first rib
what is the diaphragmatic surface of the lungs?
-lung sits superiorly to the diaphragm
-base of the lung is known as the diaphragmatic surface
-surface that sits on the diagphragm
what is the costal surface of the lungs?
-named after the adjacent ribs
-curved around the lateral aspect of the lung
what is the mediastinal surface of the lungs?
-is the medial surface
-contains the entry and exit points for all vessels and airways at a structure known as the hilus
what is the purpose and function of a pleura?
-secretes pleural fluid to full the pleural space between the two membranes
-fluid acts a lubricant, allowing the visceral pleura of the lung to slide freely on the pareital pleura of the thoracic wall during inflation and deflation
what is the parietal pleura?
-is an outer serous membrane attached to the walls and floor of the thoracic cavity around the lungs
-continous with the visceral pleura at the hilus of the lung where it is refelcted inward
what is the visceral pleura?
-a serous membrane attached to the surface of the lung that is continous with the parietal pleura at the hilius
