Q

Describe the left lung

A

-two lobes
-superior and inferior lobes
-superior lobe: contains the cardiac notch
-on superior lobe there is a small outward facing process called the lingula, that covers the heart
-has only one fissures: the oblique fissures, seperating the two lobes

Q

what is the mediastinal surface of the lungs?

A

-is the medial surface
-contains the entry and exit points for all vessels and airways at a structure known as the hilus

Q

what is the purpose and function of a pleura?

A

-secretes pleural fluid to full the pleural space between the two membranes
-fluid acts a lubricant, allowing the visceral pleura of the lung to slide freely on the pareital pleura of the thoracic wall during inflation and deflation

Q

what is the parietal pleura?

A

-is an outer serous membrane attached to the walls and floor of the thoracic cavity around the lungs
-continous with the visceral pleura at the hilus of the lung where it is refelcted inward
