large stones are placed at the bottoms of slopes so that when it rains, the water slides into the rocks, and slowly starts to soak into the soil. This reduces leeching/ surface runoff and allows plants to grow

Why is tree planting important
Trees remove carbon from the atmosphere so help tackle global warming and desertification. It keeps the soil fertile, and also provides shelter to crops.

They are cheap and enable women to carry much more water at a time, meaning they are preserving water and saving it for crops. They also allow women to spend much less time walking to get water so they can have an education
