Malware
Software designed to infiltrate a computer system and possibly damage it without the user’s knowledge
What are the seven different kinds of malware?
Viruses, worms, trojan horses, ransomware, spyware, rootkits, and spam
Virus
Malicious code that runs on a machine without the user’s knowledge and executes code; requires user action in order to reproduce and spread
What are the 10 different kinds of viruses?
Boot sector, macro, program multipartite, encrypted, polymorphic, metamorphic, stealth, armored, and hoax
What is a boot sector virus?
stored in the first sector of a hard drive and loaded into memory upon boot up
Macro
Virus embedded into a document and is executed when the document is opened by the user
Program virus
infect an executable or application (happens inside of a program)
Multipartite
Combines boot sector and program virus (loaded every time computer boots and installs itself in a program)
Encrypted Virus
A virus that’s encrypted and is difficult to detect via an antivirus program
Polymorphic virus
Advanced version of an encrypted virus that changes itself every time it is executed by altering the description module to avoid detection
Metamorphic Virus
Virus that is able to rewrite itself
Armored viruses
have a layer of protection to confuse a program or person analyzing it
Hoax Virus
Trying to trick the user into infecting their own machine
