Section 2 - (line, tone, color, texture, pattern) Flashcards
Blue deck
Colour - Neutral colours recede
De Lempicka uses muted and neutral colours on the clothing and interior of the car. These subtle colours recede helping to advance the more colourful aspects of the composition.
Colour - Contrasting colours
In De Lempicka’s portrait, opposite colours are used in the red lip of De Lempicka and the green of the car she is riding in. As they contrast, the viewer’s eye is drawn up to the small patch of red as it is eye catching and a pop of colour.
Line - same direction, movement
The lines on the car and the clothing are all going towards the same direction and they look like they are being swept behind the portrait. This helps to suggest a sense of movement which complements the car subject matter.
Line - leading up side of car
De Lempicka uses diagonal leading lines on the sides of the car. These leading lines are also dark and help to lead the viewer’s eye up to the focal point of the face.
Line - Contrast, soft lines with angular ones
The curved lines created from the folds in the scarf help to frame the face and bring a softness to contrast with the angular features of the face.
Tone - Highlights and 3D
In De Lempicka’s self portrait, lots of highlights are used in the car and across the face. The highlights are used to create a 3D effect and suggest there is light coming from the right hand side of the canvas
Tone - Wide range of values on car
De Lempicka has used a wide variety of tonal values on the side of the Bugatti. This variation of shadows and highlights gives the car form helping to make it look more three dimensional.
Texture - Smooth, shiny car texture
In De Lempicka’s self portrait, an appearance of a smooth texture has been created in the car by not showing the brushstrokes, which creates a shiny texture which mimics the metallic material of the car.
Texture - Flawless skin
De Lempicka has painted the skin of her portrait with a polished and flawless texture which helps to convey the mood of perfection.
Texture - smooth similarities
De Lempicka has created a smooth texture over all elements of the painting, such as the Bugatti and the fabric, which creates a visual cohesion in the composition.
Shape and form - Soft feminine shapes
De Lempicka uses softer organic shapes on the portrait and her clothing. This contrasts with the bulkier shapes of the car and brings a more feminine quality to the composition.
Shape and Form - Outline, bugatti shape
De Lempicka uses outline to define the geometric shapes of the Bugatti. This helps to make the car looks more solid and mechanical.
Pattern - Scarf curved folds
The repeating curved folds of De Lempicka’s silk scarf create a pattern that envelopes de Lempicka’s face helping to draw attention to the portrait.
Pattern - Bugatti parallel pattern
There is a linear parallel pattern on the side of the Bugatti which leads the viewers eye up the canvas to the portrait in the corner.
