Coarsening of data
During the coding process, some of the data’s detail is lost
Validation
A check performed by the computer as the data is being entered to ensure it is acceptable
Range check
Sets an upper and lower boundry for the data
Type check
Makes sure the data entered is of the correct type
Presence check
Ensures vital pieces of information, when the data is being entered, is present
Length check
A check to ensure the data is of the correct length
Lookup check
Takes the value entered and matches it agains a list of available values in a separate table
Picture check
Similar to a format check, ensures it is of correct format
Verification
Making sure the information from the original source is identical to the information that is being entered into a system
Double entry
A form of verification where the data is entered twice and compared to ensure it is correct
e.g. confirm password
Manual verification
Where the user proofreads / re-reads and compares the original source document to the new document
Transcription errors
Where you have made a mistake copying the data
Transposition errors
Where you have a reversed numbers or letters (typo)
No degree of accuracy
Validation or verification cannot ensure the data is accurate
Backup
Keeping a copy of the data, so that if it is lost, the backup can be restored to ensure all data is present
