What’s the Locarno pact 1925?

A
  • Germany promised respect western frontier (as drawn up in TOV)
  • Germany agreed troops out of Rhineland (As agreed in TOV)
  • GB + Italy agree to aid Germany, France, Belgium if attacked by neighbours
  • Germany agree that disputes to be settled by Conciliation Committee to mediate
  • Western boarder disputes to be referred to League of Nations
  • France agreed not to step into Germany if theirs a dispute (Between Germany + Poland or Czech)

How was the Locarno Pact successful?

A
  • Germany accepted into league of nations
  • Nobel peace prize 1926
  • First time Germany recognised Western Border imposed at Versailles + accepted loss Alsace-Lorraine to France and Eupen-Malmedy to Belgium
  • 1923 Occupation of ruhr never could happen again
  • French agree withdrawl of Rhineland (although prosponed as Germany refused to comply disarmament obligations it was still achieved without Germany promising disarmament)
  • ## Arbitration treaties (poland + Czechoslovakia) left room for possible revision of eastern boarder
