SECTION 17- FORCES AND NEWTON'S LAWS Flashcards
1
Q
State Newton’s 1st law
A
- every object continues in a state of rest or uniform motion in a straight line unless acted on by a resultant external force
2
Q
State Newton’s 2nd law
A
- Resultant force = mass x acceleration
3
Q
State Newton’s 3rd law
A
- When one object exerts a force on another there’s always a reaction, which is equal and opposite in direction to the acting force
4
Q
What are the three main base S.I. units
A
- length: metre (m)
- time: second (s)
- mass: kilogram (k)
5
Q
What does the term ‘particle’ mean
A
- the body is a point, so its dimensions don’t matter
6
Q
what does the term ‘light’ mean
A
- the body has no mass
7
Q
what does the term ‘static’ mean
A
- the body isn’t moving
8
Q
what does the term ‘rough’ mean
A
- the surface will oppose motion with friction / drag
9
Q
what does the term ‘beam’ or ‘rod’ mean
A
- a long particle (e.g. a carpenters plank)
10
Q
what does the term ‘uniform’
A
- the mass is evenly spread out throughout the body
11
Q
what does the term ‘non-uniform’ mean
A
- the mass is unevenly spread out
12
Q
what does the term ‘rigid’ mean
A
- the body doesn’t blend
13
Q
what des the term ‘thin’ mean
A
- the body has no thickness
14
Q
what does the term ‘equilibrium’ mean
A
there’s no resultant force
15
Q
what does the term ‘plane’ mean
A
- it’s a flat surface
