self compassion and EDs
what is self-compassion?
self-compassion involves being open to/moved by one’s own suffering, being non judgemental towards failures, feeling care/kindness towards oneself, realizing one’s experience is part of the human experience.
neffs model of self compassion
SELF KINDNESS (vs self judgement/criticism) + COMMON HUMANITY (recognize these experiences are normal part of being human) (vs isolation) + MINDFULNESS (vs over identification)
what are the three emotion regulation systems described in CFT?
- drive system (pursuing, striving, achievement)
- soothing system (safe, calm, nurtured, cared for)
- threat system (anger, anxiety, self-criticism)
what is CFT and who was it developed by?
CFT is compassion focused therapy and was developed by Paul Gilbert as a transdiagnostic approach to help people with feelings of shame and self-criticism
who is compassion-focused therapy targeted towards?
people who have high feelings of shame and self-criticism. It helps people with an ED who are judgemental over themselves/set high and unrealistic standards/aim to be a perfectionist
