Section 1 Water Cycle Flashcards
Water Cycle
An unending circulation of Earth’s water supply
Uptake
The process by which plants take up water through their roots
Transpiration
The release of water vapor to the atmosphere by plants
Infiltration
The movement of surface water into rock or soil through pore spaces and cracks
Sublimation
The conversion of a solid directly into a gas without passing through a liquid state
Desublimation
The conversion of a gas directly into a solid without passing through a liquid state
Evaporation
The process by which water is converted from a liquid to a gas or vapor
Precipitation
Water released from clouds as rain, sleet, snow or hail
Condensation
The process of water changing from a gaseous state to a liquid to a gas or vapour
Surface Runoff
Water that flows over the land’s surface rather than infiltrating into the ground
Advection
The horizontal movement of water through Earth’s atmosphere regardless of its phrase
Ocean Currents
The movement of masses of water within the ocean due to prevailing wind and water density differences
Excretion from living organisms
The release of water from organisms such as animals
Groundwater flow
The movement of water within groundwater aquifers beneath the ground surface
Phase Changes
The transition between solid, liquid, and gaseous phases. Each phase change either absorbs the required energy or releases energy
