Section 1: Sciences and Math Flashcards
Define Density
The mass of a substance contained in one unit of its volume.
Density = Mass of Object / Volume of Object
Define Specific Gravity
the ratio of mass of the liquid or solid to the mass of an equal volume of water.
What is the formula to convert between Celsius and Fahrenheit?
F - 32 /1.8 = C
Define Nucleus
A central part of an atom made up of protons (+) and neutrons (neutral particles)
Define Electrons
Negatively charged particles circling around the nucleus of an atom.
What is an atomic number?
The number of protons in an atom.
What is an atomic mass?
The number of protons and neutrons.
What are isotopes?
Atoms with the same atomic number but different atomic mass.
What is molecular weight?
The sum of the atomic weight of different atoms.
What is a Mole?
A unit of measurement that equals to 6.023 X 10^23.
Formula for Mole?
Mole = mass / molecular weight
Ionic Bonds
When one or more valence electrons are transferred from one atom to another.
Atom that lost electrons = positive charge
Atom that gain electrons = negative charge
Covalent Bond
Atoms share their valence electrons to complete electron requirement in the valence shell of each electron.
Endothermic Chemical reactions __________ energy.
Endothermic chemical reactions consume energy.
Exothermic chemical reactions ______ energy.
Exothermic chemical reactions produce energy.
