Section 1 - Motion And Forces Flashcards
What is Newton’s First law?
If there are no forces acting on a body, the object will continue to do what it is already doing
What is Newton’s Second Law?
For an external applied force, this change in velocity depends on the mass of the object. This can be expressed as:
F = MA
What is Newton’s third law?
When two objects interact, the forces they exert on each other are equal and opposite. For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction
What is the mass of an object?
The amount of stuff that makes up something
What is the weight of an object?
The weight of an object is the amount of force pulling down on something due to gravity
What is the equation for weight?
Weight = mass x gravitational field strength
What is Inertia?
Inertia is the tendency for motion to remain unchanged. Objects will continue to do what they are doing unless acted on by a force.
What is the equation for momentum?
Momentum = mass x velocity
What is thinking distance?
The distance the car travels during the time it takes for the driver to react
What is stopping distance?
The distance the car travels before it comes to a stop when the brakes are applied.
What is total stopping distance?
The combined distance of thinking and stopping distance
What is the equation for changing momentum?
Change in momentum / time taken
F = (mv - mu) / t
