Mr and Mrs John Fox and their 2 daughters Katherine and Margarette moved into a temporary accomodation in Hydesville (Aroadia) New York, USA. For 2 weeks they heard unuasual noises in the evening. 31 March 1848 they heard the noises again at daytime and found a way to communicate with a code. These are the Hydesville Rappings.
What was the source of the Hydesville Rappings?
The communicator claimed to be the spirit of a peddler (=marskramer) who had been murdered for his money and possesions in the same house by a former tenant (=voormalige huurder) and buried in the cellar around five years previously.
How was news of the rappings spread?
The phenomena was recordered by Mr. E.E. Lewis who gained 22 signed statements from those who witnessed and were involved in the events and published the statements in April 1848. The report describes how communication with the spirit world was able to confirm for example ages of those present. The report also includes the account of 2 previous incumbents of the house who also had heard unexplained rappings.
