Section 1: Effects On The International Community Flashcards
The effects discussed in essay are…
refugees, terrorism, disease and brain drain.
Refugees explain
This means that persecution, war or violence would force people out of their home country and into neighbouring ones. Upon a refugees arrival in a foreign country they compete with local citizens for scarce resources such as land, water, housing, food and medical services.
Refugees example
For example, heavy fighting in South Sudan over the last two years has displaced more than 2.6million people and blocked humanitarian aid deliveries for some 650,000 people as aid organisations were forced to withdraw.
Terrorism explain
This means that terrorist groups can take advantage of a country weakened by poverty and operate much easier.
Terrorism example
For example, France has been invited into Mali to lead an international peace keeping effort to try and tackle the growing violence and terrorist groups operating in the country.
Disease explain
This means that diseases local to developing African countries are spread across borders and countries into unprepared, developed countries.
Disease example
For example, the 2014-16 outbreak of Ebola was very concerning as it quickly spread across many countries in west Africa and to the developed world including the UK, the USA and Germany. Less developed countries are more likely to be the source of new diseases and so with the rise in air travel the international community is at greater risk until healthcare provision in the developing world improves.
Brain drain explain
This means that poor working conditions caused by poverty in developing African nations drives trained professionals out and into foreign countries for improved working conditions.
Brain drain example
For example, the Independent reported in 2018 that around 15% of current NHS doctors came from Asia and Africa with most of them coming from the developing countries of Pakistan and India.
