what is the linear view
speaker-> listener (I talk you listen)
what is the interactional view
speaker-> listener + listener->speaker (one after another)
what is the transactional view
speaker/listener (flowing convo)
what are the 6 elements of interpersonal communication
source-receiver, competence, messages, channel, noise, context
what is source-receiver
senders are encoders, receivers are decoders
what is a competence
the ability to communicate. adapt to different cultures
what is a message
manifest content: the idea that is conveyed
what is a channel
email, text, phone
what is noise
anything that interferes with sending or receiving a message
examples of noise
physical (loud noise)
physiological (visual)
psychological (what’s going on in your head)
semantic (not understanding the words)

physical (the environment)

temporal (where the message fits in a sequence of events)
what are the 5 factors that influence communication
psychological size, accessibility distortion anonymity artifacts/room arrangements
what is psychological size
how equal to the other person one feels
what is accessibility
is it easy to get in touch with the person
what is distortion
the message could be modified when going through the communication network
what is anonymity
when one can’t be identified, could be easier to be honest or lead to socially unacceptable behaviors
