Section 1 - CH.1 Flashcards
Design theory
Way to direct design based on a system of beliefs or philosophy
Environmental design research
Focuses on theories of the interaction between humans and their environment
Environmental design research attempts
To develop an approach to rational design based on scientific research rather than anecdotal evidence or personal philosophies
What is the problem with environmental design research using directly to make design decisions?
The complexity of the interaction between humans and buildings, and effect of changing variables
Evidence based design
Simply basing design decisions on credible research that links one or more environmental elements with a desired outcome.
What form of environmental design research are there?
A literature review of past work done on the subject of interest or as complex as performing original investigation specifically targeted to the project.
What form of EBD research may take?
Form of literature searches, observations of existing facilities, interviews, questionnaires with users and facility managers and post occupancy evaluations.
Gestalt psychology
Founded in Germany in early 20th century by Max Wertheimer
Holds that humans innately perceive things as a whole,
So that what is perceived is complete and comprehensible.
Simultaneous contrast
The same color appears to change depending on the background color it is seen against
Binocular disparity
The difference in what eye sees.
Most prevalent at distances under about 10ft.
Relative closeness of objects to the horizon line
For objects closer to the horizon are farther away
